Detroit, MI - October 28, 2008 (realcatholictv.com) - Before a crowd of 50 mostly college students at Oakland University in suburban Detroit late Monday night, Catholic Obama apologist and supporter Doug Kmiec called his candidates support for the Freedom of Choice Act boneheaded and insisted that he had told Obama as much.
Kmiec has drawn the ire of Catholics all over the country including influential bishops who have called his support of Obama a "disservice to the Church." That quote comes from Denver archbishop Charles Chaput.
Kmiec was in metro Detroit on a part-political, part self-promotion tour as he campaigns for Obama as well as his new book, Can a Catholic Really Support Him?
When the question about the Freedom of Choice Act was asked by a student from the University of Detroit Mercy, Kmiec ducked and weaved his way through a contorted answering, first saying the Act was a "non-starter" and he has been assured by leading Democrats that it would not make it through Congress.
Then he said that even if it did, he felt confident it wouldnt pass constitutional muster and would be thrown out by federal courts.
All this despite the fact that Obama made a pledge in front of a Planned Parenthood fundraiser in July 2007, that signing FOCA would be the first thing he would do as President.
Video of Kmiecs answers as well as commentary on his obtuse answer is available on The Vortex, hosted by www.realcatholictv.com.
